2. What is the make and model of the computer?

3. Do you see any error codes or error details for the unknown device?

4. Have you tried to update the device drivers to Windows 8.1 version?

This issue may occur if the Intel chipset driver is not up to date.

Let’s try the following steps and check.

Method 1:

If the issue start after upgrading to Windows 8.1, let’s refer to the computer manufacturer or Intel support website and try installing Windows 8.1 version of chipset drivers and check.

Logged on to Intel Website for latest drivers, which were nothing about Chipset.


Have run Windows update, but nothing seems to apply to my issue.

Since the issue persists, you need to get in touch with Nortech Support or Intel Support to check for Windows 8.1 chipset driver updates.

Also check for BIOS updates with Nortech Support or Intel Support for Windows 8.1.

Thank you for your reply. Tried your suggestion, however the problem still exists. Unknown device is still listed with a Code 28. Not sure if this Windows 8.1 Pro message is indicating that something that is plugged into the motherboard isn't working, or even why the chipset is cited.

Nortech Support suggest sending the computer back to them, so that they can put in another C: drive in the system, to test what is going on.

Updated the BIOS to the latest version from the Intel site. The problem still remains, with the Device manager in Windows Pro 8.1 indicating that there is an unknown device with the same Code 28 on the Chipset. Not sure if it is trying to tell me that something plugged into the motherboard is not functioning or what it is that triggers the unknown device. Not sure as to how to proceed.
