Troubleshooting
Problem
This document contains a list of recommended values for the Remote Printer Queue (RMTPRTQ) parameter when using a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) or the Send TCP/IP Spooled File (SNDTCPSPLF) command to print using the TCP/IP LPR/LPD.
Resolving The Problem
Note: This document was previously titled, TCP/IP LPR/LPD Printing with Recommended RMTPRTQ Values. This document contains a list of recommended values for the Remote Printer Queue (RMTPRTQ) parameter when using a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) or the Send TCP/IP Spooled File (

SNDTCPSPLF) command to print using the TCP/IP LPR/LPD.Notes:
1. | The Remote Printer Queue (RMTPRTQ) parameter specifies the LPR queue name that the network interface card (NIC), print server or is expecting for LPD (or Line Printer Daemon) print requests. The LPR queue name is hardware specific when sending spooled files to a printer or printer server, but also must be set to a specific value when sending to a Windows print queue, a Unix or Linux print queue, or to another IBM i system. This value is typically case sensitive as well, so it should generally be specified in single quotes. |
2. | The values listed below are case-sensitive. If the value is shown in lowercase, then the value must be specified in lowercase using single quotation marks ('). If the value is specified without single quotation marks, IBM OS/400 or IBM i5/OS will convert the value to all uppercase before changing the RMTPRTQ parameter in the output queue description. This may cause the writer for the RMTOUTQ to end unexpectedly or may cause spooled files to stay in SND (Sending) status rather than printing. |
3. | If the RMTPRTQ parameter is not set to correct LPR queue name, or if it is specified in the wrong case, then the RMTOUTQ may be unable to connect to the printer; print server; or Windows, Linux, AIX or IBM i print queue. This can cause spooled files to stay in SND (Sending) status without being sent. |
4. | Once the RMTOUTQ has been created, the Work with OUTQ Description (WRKOUTQD) command can be used to verify that all of the parameters, including the Remote printer queue (RMTPRTQ) parameter, are specified correctly. If not, use the End Writer (ENDWTR) command with the When to end writer (OPTION) parameter set to *IMMED to end the writer immediately, then use the WRKOUTQ command to display and the F13 (Change) Key to change the settings in the RMTOUTQ. |
5. | This list is not intended to be all-inclusive. If using a network interface or system that does not appear in this list, contact your OEM vendor to find out what value to use when sending spooled files using LPR/LPD. |
For information on configuration and limitations of RMTOUTQs, refer to the following documents:
N1010090: Configuring a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ)

How to use this document to determine which RMTPRTQ value you should use
This video shows how to use this document to determine the recommended Remote printer queue (RMTPRTQ) value for your print server.

- Information Concerning WYSE and UNISYS 3000 Series Terminals
]Support for LPR/LPD printing has been added to WYSE Winterm and Unisys WInPath 3000 Series Terminals through a firmware upgrade. The terminal's firmware must be at level 348_4 or higher to configure LPD on the terminal and LPD must be configured before a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) will be able to send OS/400 or i5/OS spooled files to a printer attached to a 3000 Series terminal. Contact either WYSE or Unisys for assistance with checking the firmware level or getting a firmware upgrade.Once the 3000 Series Terminal is at the proper firmware level, the following steps can be taken to configure LPD on the terminal:
Note: This is provided as a convenience and is derived from the WYSE Winterm 3000 Series Windows-based Terminal Administrators Guide. This document is available on the WYSE Web site at www.wyse.com. For further assistance with configuring LPD on the terminal, contact WYSE or Unisys.Once LPD has been configured on the terminal and a printer name has been assigned, set the Remote Print Queue (RMTPRTQ) value in the RMTOUTQ. The print queue name is case-sensitive, and the RMTPRTQ value must match it. If using lowercase letters, use single quotation marks (') when specifying the RMTPRTQ value.[1. Press F2 to invoke the Terminal Properties dialog box. 2. Click on the Devices tab. 3. Click on the LPD icon in the icon container. This will bring up the LPD Config dialog box. 4. Check the Enable Printer box to enable a printer connected to the terminal. 5. Type the Printer Name (the default is 'Noname'). 6. Leave the Port set to 515.Note: This is the standard port for LPR/LPD and the only one that will work with an IBM® iSeries™ family of servers RMTOUTQ. 7. Leave the Send Form Feed box unchecked. 8. Click on the OK button.

</div>]- TCP/IP Ports Used by Line Printer Requester (LPR) in OS/400 or i5/OS
]OS/400 and i5/OS uses the Line Printer Requester (LPR) TCP-based protocol when using the Send TCP/IP Spooled File (SNDTCPSPLF or LPR) command or when a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) has been configured with the Connection type (CNNTYPE) parameter set to *IP.LPR on an iSeries family system always uses destination port 515 for sending TCP/IP frames to the remote device or remote system (for example, an IBM Infoprint 1140 printer or another iSeries family system) and uses a source port between 256 and 1024 for receiving TCP/IP frames from the remote device or remote system.According to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Web site, www.ietf.org/, RFC 1179 Line Printer Daemon Protocol, section 3.1 (Message formats) states that:LPR is a TCP-based protocol. The port on which a line printer daemon listens is 515. The source port must be in the range 721 to 731, inclusive. A line printer daemon responds to commands send to its port. All commands begin with a single octet code, which is a binary number which represents the requested function. The code is immediately followed by the ASCII name of the printer queue name on which the function is to be performed. If there are other operands to the command, they are separated from the printer queue name with white space (ASCII space, horizontal tab, vertical tab, and form feed). The end of the command is indicated with an ASCII line feed character. This indicates that OS/400 and i5/OS should limit its source ports to between 721 and 731 rather than using ports 256 through 1024. However, this would limit OS/400 to 11 Remote Output Queues (RMTOUTQs) actively running on the system at one time. The decision to use ports 256 through 1024 was based on a draft version of RFC 1179, dated 24 Sept. 1991. Section 3.1 (Message formats) in the draft version of RFC 1179 states that:LPR is a TCP-based protocol. The port on which a line printer daemon listens is 515. The source port must be less than 1024. A line printer daemon responds to commands sent to its port. The daemon may choose not to accept the connection for several reasons: - The source port isn't 'trusted' (in the BSD sense of being less than 1024). - The originating host isn't permitted to use the printing facilities provided by this host.In these cases, the daemon sends an error message and closes the connection. The draft version of RFC 1179 states that the source port must be less than 1024 rather than only between 721 and 731.Note that some Line Printer Daemon (LPD) programs, printers or print servers may follow a strict interpretation of the Final Version of RFC1179, and therefore may reject print data sent using the Line Printer Requester (LPR) protocol if the sending host system uses a source port other than ports 721-731, inclusive. If this is the case, the Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) or Send TCP/IP Spooled File (SNDTCPSPLF or LPR) command may fail. Most LPD programs, printers and print servers follow the Draft Version of RFC1179 or simply do not care which source port is used to print through LPR/LPD, so this should only be a problem in rare cases.According to APAR SE12324, the iSeries family is looking to provide a parameter in a future release to specify the version of the RFC. The default action will be to use the draft version of RFC1179 (and therefore source ports 256-1024), but will allow the final version of RFC1179 (and therefore ports 721-731).
